Cartography talk with John Nelson

October 8, 2025

4:30 PM - 5:30 PM

A headshot of John Nelson is centered, showing him smiling with glasses, a short reddish beard, and a green nature background. Surrounding the headshot are colorful, artistic map textures, including labeled Great Lakes and a circular aerial map inset showing walk time buffers..

Event Description
John Nelson is a cartography and data visualization expert known for his artistic, playful approach to professional mapmaking. You may have seen his creative GIS tutorials on YouTube or watched him pull cartographic shenanigans in front of hundreds at the Esri User Conference. Now he’s joining UPP 461 & 462 students for a conversation about maps, and you’re all invited!

About the Speaker
John Nelson is a map maker, software experience designer, and writer at Esri, where he creates fringe geographic data, curious web experiences, marginally educational blogs, and debatably instructional videos. He works out of a small woodshed in Michigan and relishes the opportunity to connect with fellow map enthusiasts.
